Artist Bio
Kathryn Semolic is a painter whose strikingly bold still lifes draw attention to the abundance of beauty in everyday moments. A strong graphic design sensibility drives her compositions and adds humor and accessibility to realistic depictions of items as simple as a doorknob, a mailbox, or piece of candy.
Kathryn's artwork and how-to projects have been published in the U.S. and Spain. Her most recent and favorite honors have been quite close to home, the inclusion of her work in the 2009 Arkansas Artists Engagement Calendar, the cover of What's Up! Magazine, and an exhibition titled “A Celebration of Arkansas Artists” in the offices of Senator Mark Pryor.
"I paint everyday objects as totems of beauty and gratitude. Taking a moment to notice the extraordinary objects around me engages my imagination and helps me find new perspectives and metaphors. It is a meditative experience which I would like to share with others through these quiet paintings of ordinary moments.
I paint big eyed girls that make people smile and laugh with child-like wonder. They celebrate the unity of body, mind, and spirit, something which children instinctively know and exercise through their play. My work is inspired by child's play and science, by Wonderland and rabbit holes, by cartoons, graphic arts, and funk, by the interplay of colors, the seduction of a curve, and by the awesome experience of being part of the natural world."
